Elastics (rubber bands)
These small latex elastics are often used with braces to achieve movement of the teeth and to correction the bite relation between teeth. They come in many different sizes and strengths that are prescribed by Dr. Lamansky depending upon your needs. Your cooperation with the wearing of these elastics will help you get the beautiful smile you want in the shortest possible time. For those with latex allergies, latex-free elastics are available.
MARA
The MARA (Mandibular Anterior Repositioning Appliance) is a simple and durable appliance that is cemented on to the back molar teeth to correct the bite relationship between upper and lower teeth. It can often be an alternative to headgear wear. A MARA does not require patient compliance with wearing instructions as it is not removable, which improves reliabililty and leads to shortened treatment times. It can also be combined with other types of appliances such as a maxillary (upper) expander.
RME (Rapid Maxillary Expander)
Expanders are generally used to widen the upper arch and to correct crossbites (when the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth). The RME is non-removable and worn on the roof of the mouth. It is actitvated with a small intrument called a key that is used once or twice a day, depending on doctor's instructions. Patients should be aware that a gap sometimes develops between the upper front teeth as the RME is activated. This gap will be closed with braces later in treatment. The RME is usually in place for four to six months. After the RME is removed, a holding bar or Tranpalatal Arch (TPA) is often placed to maintain the expansion of the upper jaw.
Buttons
Buttons are small braces designed to be attachments for elastics. They can be used individually or in conjunction with braces.
Headgear
Headgear is an extra-oral appliance that is removable. It attaches to braces on the upper molar teeth. Headgear consists of two components: a metal facebow that inserts into the braces on the upper molar teeth and a strap that may go behind the neck or the back of the head, depending upon patient needs. Dr. Lamansky will discuss if headgear is an option for your treatment. Cooperation with wear of a headgear is vital for its successful use and a definite factor in determining if headgear is right for you. ( See more headgear info in the additional info section.)
Transpalatal Arch (TPA)
This versatile fixed appliance may be used after a Rapid Maxillary Expander (RME) or in combination with other forms of braces on all or some of the teeth as determined by Dr. Lamansky. It is usually in place for several months or more.
Red, White and Blue
There are many patients who present to our office wanting to straighten their front teeth without having to wear braces.
Now we have a simple, cost effective alternative for those prospective patients. It is called the Red, White & Blue system from Allesee Orthodontic Appliances. Made of clear, lightweight plastic, each retainer works to coax your teeth in small incremental movements, getting them progressively closer to the desired result. They’re comfortable for patients to wear and easy to talk with. Whether you are in school, on the go with a family, or a professional in the public eye, RWB aligners fit easily into your busy lives. RWB aligners are much simpler and less expensive than comparable treatment systems, so it offers an affordable option for patients who otherwise would probably never have treatment.
